13th March 2007 - Round 11 Round Up

A Grade

The A's played Woody South at Ledger reserve.
After batting first and making 272 last week, we fancied our chances. Early wickets got the ball rolling before a middle order partnership steadied the ship. Jimmy bowled a mammoth spell of 25 overs taking 3 for 88, while Skiddy took 3/36 off his 10 overs. At the business end of the day, the game came down to the final over, and then the final ball. Woody South were 9 down needing 1 run to win off the final ball of the day, when the batter got a snick through to the keeper to end the game in an amazing tie! As fate would have Concordia didn't get the points they needed in their game and in a reversal of last years apparent curse, the Valley just slipped in to 4th place on the ladder and secured a place in this years finals!
See the full match card here.

** The A's first semi final will be played against Payneham at Payneham oval. - I have also heard rumors of some free beer (a keg of on Sunday) thanks to the Coopers Ale house so come on down this weekend and help support the boys! **

B Grade
The B's were playing for pride and took on Brighton at the valley. After batting first and making 197, we set about defending them in the 37C heat. An early wicket started the rot and some great bowling by Trav Rio (4/40 off 17) abley supported by Tommy 'Do it for Riley' McInnes 3/40 (plus some help from the crowd under the tree) saw the wickets continue to fall throughout out the day. In the end it was quite a comfortable win, (despite a few HUGE zaks off Scooters' bowling) as the boys rolled Brighton for 140 in the 52nd over.
The early end to the Brighton innings gave us an extra 22 overs to have a final hit for the season. Muzz smashed a quick fire 35, before Scooter (18) and Troy (9) closed the day and the season out undefeated at the crease. Final score in the 2nd innings was 5/90.

C Grade
The C's had a win over Hectorville. After bowling Hecorville out for 149 last week with Adam getting his name in the paper for BOWLING (3/11 of six) we hit 167 off 65 overs. Rich Mellors hit 35 while ?someone- help please? hit 57

LOC Grade
The LOCs finished their scheduled season with a win over Walkerville. Batting first, the runs came quick as Leigh Crowhurst hit 87 at the top of the order while Jo Galina put on 40. The final score was 225 from 40 overs.
In reply with the ball, Walkerville ran out of overs at 6/190. Leigh had a great game taking 2 wickets from a single over, Tim Discome took 0/12 off 7 and Laird chipped in with 2/35 from his 7.

27th Feb 2007 - Round 10 Roundup

The heat again played a part in this weeks round with the first Saturday of the round abandoned in favour of a few cold Beers at the Bremen and a round of 50 over matches the following Saturday. It was an important round for the club with both the As and Bs needing a win with finals just around the corner, unfortunately however, for the most part things didn't pan out just as we had hoped...

A Grade

The A grade played host to top side Payneham at the Valley.
Payneham won the toss and elected to bat first on a good batting wicket. The home side got off to a great start with the ball, at one stage having the visitors 5 for not many, before a good partnersship for the 7th wicket stopped the rot.
Jon De Conno showed everyone he hasn't lost any form, taking a casual 5 fa in his come back game, while the others bowlers did well too, all returning respectable figures. Payneham eventually batted out their 50 overs, posting a reasonable score of 185 considering their earlier predicament.
After a tea break we began the run chase with a different opening pair, with Barty this time joined by the in form Heath Weber. We got off to a decent start before Heath fell to a great reflex caught & bowled catch for 23. Murray came and went for none as did Paddy and when Dunny was knocked over for 7 and last weeks saviour Nick O'Dell was trapped in front for another globe, we looked to be in a bit of trouble. Macca came in down the order and batted well, sharing a partnership with Maddy (33), hitting 56 before he was knocked over. In the final overs the tail had the job ahead of them and for a while it seemed like a repeat of last weeks cliffhanger was on the cards, but disaster struck and we were bowled out with 2 balls to spare needing just another 4 runs to win. You can view the match card for this game here.

B Grade
Following the Bs great start to the season, recent results had seen much of the hard work eroded and the possibility of missing the finals became a reality. The Bs season eventually came down to this game as we took on SPOC on their turf..
The morning got off to a bad start when our captain & keeper, Wisha, was forced to withdraw due to illness. It was the first time he'd ever had to withdraw from a game due to illness (or injury) and knowing Wish he must have been real crook to miss the game. Mirra took the gloves, Bear was dragged up from the Cs as Wishys replacement and Muzza took over as skipper.
Muzz won the toss and elected to bat on a flat, but grassy wicket. The first over yeilded no less than 4 chances for a wicket so when they all went down we though luck was finally on our side, until Scotty was caught behind the wicket for 4. Muzz started hitting the middle bat and was joined by Mirra who after being given a life also started hitting the ball well, hitting one spectacular pull shot for six off a quick, rising delivery that had to be one of the shots of the season. Things were looking good before Muzz fell for 38 and Mirra fell shortly afterwards for 36. Willow and Bear both failed to trouble to scorers, before Butch (25) and Rocky (13) settled things down a bit. In the final overs Nick Lehman (21*) batted well and was joined by Ribba who hit a quick 21. Dyce came in with an over to bat and helped push the score past 200 before he ran himself out on the final ball.
Reasonably happy with our 202 runs, we took the field (after a mediocre tea) determined to win. Butch (1/46) got things started knocking over one of the openers in the first over and Ribba (4/35) also chipped in, taking a few more in his 10 over spell. Chappy also bowled well with the swinging ball, taking 2/34 from his 10. At 8 down for around 130 the game was there for the taking. Unfortunately we missed the chances we were given, a few vital catches went down and a runout chance went begging. To their credit the SPOC tail batted well, and despite every effort by the Valley boys we couldn't hold them back as they reached our score in the 46th over with 2 wickets in the bank. It was a dissapointing end, with the last two games going down to the wire but not going our way. The card for the game is here.

C Grade
The C Grade, playing for pride with finals now out of reach, hosted Unley at St Pauls.
Aza won the toss and chose to bat first, opening up with Rowdy. The pair got off to an excellent start, putting on 99 for the first wicket before Aza went for an excellent 61. Coming off a ton last game, Scotty Anderson kept things moving hitting another 50 while Rowdy continued hitting the ball well, finally falling for well made 82. Acka came in next and walked straight off, trapped in front for golden globe. Leigh batted well for 22 and the tail didn't really wag but it mattered not as the top order had already put the runs on the board. The final score was a massive 273 from 40 overs.
With the ball, the bowlers did well restricting Unley to an uncompetitive total as they were never really in the hunt despite a 10th wicket partnerhship. Richie added another 4 wickets to his tally while Trav also got amongst them taking 3/50. The card for this impressive game can be viewed here.

LOC Grade (Round 15)
The LOC's are on track for a finals berth and potentially a promotion to LOBs after another win over Glenunga at Margaret Bond Reserve.
(Details for the match to follow once posted on ATCA website..)

12th Feb 2007 - Round 9 Roundup

After last weeks heat wave all cricketers welcomed the perfect conditions on offer in the second week of this round. Nicko carried the A grade to a stunning win over Marion, Jo Galina hit his second ton for the year, while the Bs fought to the death, eventually going down by 2 runs..

A Grade

The A grade played host to Marion at the Valley.
Marion won the toss and elected to bat first. The bowlers did well in the hot conditions, restricting Marion to a chaseable target of 195 with Jimmy (3/37) and Skiddy (3/41) getting their names in the paper, while Macca also bowled well taking 2/26 off 15 overs.
Despite the perfect batting conditions, we got off to a shocking start with the top 5 failing to reach double figures. The collapse brought Macca and Nicko to the crease who proceded to rescue the innings with some good quality batting. Macca finally went for a well made 36 but when Maddy was run out for 5 and Jimmy was knocked over for 2 we looked to be in deep trouble again. Pete Butcher came out and hit the ball beautifully before he was run out for 15 as the nerves grew and Skiddy came to the crease with Nicko as the final two. It was a nail biting finish as Nicko entered the 90s for the first time as an A grader and the score to get came within reach. Needing to two off the final ball to win, Nick smacked the ball, a fielders desperate attempt to catch the ball failed despite getting a hand to it and the two jubilant batters returned for the second run, bringing home a great win in one of the games for the season for the As. Nicko was never in doubt for man of the match honours. The full card can be found here

B Grade
The B grade did the long drive down to Marion this week.
Wisha won the toss and had no hesitation in having a hit first. We got off to a bad start with Muzz chipping one to the on side field in the early overs. Wisha came in at 1st drop and weathered the storm as wickets fell around him. We took the tea break at 4/65 in the 38th over but when Wisha went for a well constructed 40 we were in trouble. At 8/102 things looked grim, and we needed the tail to wag. Fortunately a 68 run partnership for the 9th wicket guided the side towards a respectable total. Ribba(30) fell in the 78th over but Chappy (54*) continued to belt the bowling around in the finals overs, reaching his 50 with a huge hit back over the bowlers head, landing 30 cm inside the rope. The final score ended up at 9/194.
Marion rode their luck early and got off to a good start before Ribba got the breakthough with Muzz taking the catch at 1st slip. Luck continued to go Marions way as wayward shots fell just short of fielders and a few key runout opportunties were missed. At the tea break things weren't looking good with Marion requiring around 70 runs to win with plenty of wickets in hand. We decided the final session had to be ours and ours it was. The bowlers bowled great line and lengths and the wickets began to tumble. The boys really lifted as the Marion middle order quickly exposed their lower order. The ball suprisingly started swinging as Chappy (4/57) and Ribba (4/43) ripped through them. The final two wickets came from successive yorker balls just after Marion had passed our score, leaving us with an odd feeling of having done really well to claw back in to the game yet not being able to take home the win.
Bowling out Marion early gave us 16 overs to have another hit which saw Muzz (25) and Rocky (38) smack the bowling around before Rocky edged one up into his cheek bone retiring hurt for an impressive 37. Mirra (25*) gave us something to cheer about hitting successive sixes off the vocal Marion keepers' bowling before we retired to the rooms to ponder what nearly was. Second innings score was 2/112 from just 16 over
Chappy's 50 not out and 4/57 earned him successive man of the match awards. The full match card can be seen here

C Grade
The C Grade played Pooraka at St Pauls.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, we couldn't have gotten off to a worse start with Aza being caught at gully off the first ball of the day for a golden duck. Fortunately things got better from there as Scotty Anderson batted brilliantly for the rest of the day, making yet another club ton (100) before being the last man out. The final score was a respectable 202.
We got off to a good start with the ball, taking an early run out before a good partnership for the 2nd wicket made things harder. We got a few wickets back but another partnership saw Pooraka get over the line, ending their innigns at 6/250 from 80 overs. Man of the match was awarded to Scotty Anderson for his 100 in the first innings, but Travis Rio deserves a special mention for his bowling effort of a massive 26 overs for just 55 runs for no reward.
The full match card is here

LOC Grade (Round 14)
The LOC's played SPOC at Wilson Oval
Batting first, SPOC posted a decent score of 181 before being bowled out in the 38th over. Pfitzy was the star with the ball taking 4/17 while Timmy Discombe came out of retirement to take a casual 3/20.
In reply with the Bat, Wilks fell early brining JoJo Galina to the crease at first drop with the inform Jordan Pepper. Pep and Jo shared a great partnership before Pep went for another impressive innings of 47. JoJo continued to smack them around, being well supported by Shurvs as Joe hit yet another 100 for the season! His innings finally came to an end on 120 which takes him to the overall first position for the club runs tally and past the magic 400 runs mark too.

Round 8 Round Up

Round 8 (One Day Games due to rain previous week) Played Saturday 27th January

It was a generally overcast day on the weekend, with patches of scorching sun when the clouds parted. It wasn't a particularly good day for the club with only one side bringing home a win.

A Grade
The A Grade ventured down South to take on Flinders Uni.
We won the toss and batted first and posted a respectable total of 221. Murray Riddle continued his excellent return to A grade batting form, posting an impressive 91, however he could have done with a little more assistance with Nicko (31), Dunny (25) and Barty (24) the 3 next best with the bat.
In the run chase, it was a good game but the 221 wasn't quite enough with Flinders eventually getting the runs at 7 down with 3 overs to spare. Bretty Madigan again did well with the ball taking 3/39 off his ten, while Jimmy also did well taking 2 for 29 of his allocated 10 overs. Pete Butcher bowled 6 overs and took 3/35.
The loss leaves the A's teetering on the edge of a finals berth, setting in equal 4th, just up on points on the ladder
The card for this match is here..

B Grade
The B Grade took on Old Scotch at the Valey.
After last weeks loss, the Bs were keen to redeem themselves on the lucious outfield at the Valley, but unfortunately things didn't go our way. After loosing the toss and predicatbly being asked to have a bowl first, we had a bit of a horror day in the field with a number of catches going down at vital points. The visitors opening stand was eventually broken at 89 and was quickly followed by a mini collapse of 5/15 spearheaded by a great spell of bowling by Scott Dobson and Skiddy. At this point we were right in the game but the visitors consolidated and despite a hanger from Bear in the deep, some lusty hitting at the death on a quick outfield saw the score to climb to 260.
Despite a shoulder injury sustained in the field, Andrew Murray started the run chase with a rush, smashing the new ball around for a quick fire 36. Mirra came and went as did Frang. Paddy Harney (39) batted well sharing a good partnership with Bear (13) before Bear committed suicide on second run that was never on. Lee Crowhurst (22) batted well but when Paddy was bowled and Wisha nearly walked on a plumb LBW for none, the end was in sight. The tail didn't really wag and we were eventaully bowled out for a dissapointing 147.
The full match card is available here

C Grade
The C's took on Modbury at Banksia Park High School.
The Cs recorded the only win for the round and Richie was quite happy with the days play in the after match presentation. Richie and Chappy bowled well taking 2 wickets each in a good all round performance with the ball, with Richie also doing well with the bat, hitting 30 odd. (More to come once the scorecard is published on the ATCA website.) .

LOC Grade
The LOCs hosted SPOC at St Pauls.
By all accounts the pitch was a shocker, as was the result for our boys. Only two batters made it in to double figures while 4 brought back duck eggs. The rather embarrasing score of 10/67 in 25.2 overs was chased down in just 18 overs for the loss of just two wickets.

Round 7

Round 7 (One Day Games) Played Saturday 13th January

A cracker of a day welcomed cricketers in the one day round scheduled for the first game for 2007. Results were mixed for the club, with the As returning another good win, while the Bs suffered their first defeat for the season..

A Grade
The A Grade took on local rivals Modbury at the Valley.
Batting first, Modbury got the early break through with Murray being sent back to the shed without scoring before Heath and Barty took control with a good partnership for the second wicket. There were lots of starts with no one really going on with it, however the final score settled on a respectable 10/222 in the 49th over.
In reply Modbury were steam rolled for just 96 with Brett Madigan again being the star with the ball, taking early top order wickets to set the side up. Peter Butcher also bowled well taking a 3 fa as did Macca. Rolling Modbury early gave the Valleys a second hit, and they made the most of their 14 overs, belting 104 runs with Riddle redeaming himself with a well fought 50 not out. The win puts the Valleys in 4th place on the ladder.
The match card is here..

B Grade
The B Grade took on Hectorville at Daly oval.
We had a great opportunity to cement top spot on the ladder, but as fate would have it it wasn't to be. Wishy won the toss, which probably wasn't such a good thing with the decision to bat first backfiring somewhat as the deck proved very tough to bat on, as the ball refused to come on to the bat and proved to be a bit of bowlers wicket. Muzz went without scoring as did the rock ape, and we never really recovered. Wishy (21) and Leigh Crowy (22) top scored, but runs came slowly and we were finally dismissed for just 127 in the 47th over
In reply with the ball, we started well with Brett Dyson nabbing two early wickets to have the home side in trouble at 2/6 and we were unlucky not to get a 3rd early wicket, with an LB not going our way. The bowlers worked hard to get wickets, but as the wicket flattened out late in the day we simply didnt have the runs on the board. Best with the ball was Brett Dyson with 2/39 off 10 and Ribba chipped in with 2/32 off his 10. The loss drops us to 3rd spot on the ladder.
The match card is here

C Grade
The C's took on Gaza at St Pauls.
Batting first, Acker smacked them around to hit a quick fire 45 with good support from Richie(34) and Pocock(24). The tail refused to wag however and we were dismissed for 169 in the 39th over.
In reply, Gaza managed to chase the runs down ending up at 7/181 in the 35th. Richie added 3 more wickets to his club tally being the pick of the bowlers. The match card is here

LOC Grade
The LOCs took on Modbury at Charles Campbell.
Batting first, Modbury were rolled for 92 with Andrew Laird returning the unbelievable figures of (wait for it) 7 overs, 7 maidens 5 for none! That's not a typo kids, he took 5 for 0 off 7 overs. Lozzo rekons his 6/1 was better, but right now the congratulations go to Lairdy!
In reply with the bat, Brett Wilkey top scored with 31 as the runs were knocked off in the 24th over.
New comer to the club Mikey Aldous (aka run machine) also registered his first runs for the club with a spectacular 4 (out) which included a leg glance all the way to the boundary.- Well done champ!

Round 6 Update

Round 6 - Game started 16th December

A pleasant summers day greeted cricketers on Saturday following the heat wave that prevented play from starting in the scheduled one day game last week.

The A Grade are in a great position, belting Para Hills for well over 300 with Heath Weber getting 8 runs short of his second ton for the year, while our Club Captain Macca finally got amongst the runs too..

The Bs had a tough day in the field, after bowling well early to see the vistors 117 after 40 overs, some hefty hitting on a batting wicket saw the score to chase race past 300. Let's hope it's a stinker on Saturday huh!

I have no idea what happened in the C Grade sorry, hopefully someone will email me an update and i'll post it ASAP.

The LOCs went down to Flinders park at St Pauls.

The conversation went something like this:

"So did you hear about the 20/20 match on Sunday?"
" Yeah the Valley's went down huh? "
" Yep, they did. Did you hear abour Macca? First ball of the day, - a huge six! The ball was last seen bouncing over the houses on the far side of the oval! "
" Oh really? Wow..... So what's Macca doing opening the bowling anyway?"

29 Nov 2007 - Round 4 Roundup

A hot summers day greeted us on day 2 of round 4, while the Aussies began their assault on regaining the Ashes..
sun

A Grade
The result of this game was quite evident by the sombre faces that greeted me when I strolled in to the shed on Saturday afternoon. The book will show that it was a close match, with Concordia getting across the line with a single wicket in hand, but those who were there will tell you it was a game that really should have been won. The nineth wicket fell at around 240 and with Concordia still requiring another 30 plus runs, it was game on. It wasn't to be however and the vistors were eventually dismissed for 287. Scooter took 4 wickets in the innings and man of the match was awared to Murray for his knock of 85. The loss sees the A's just out of the top 4 (beneath Concordia). The card for the match can be seen here.

B Grade
The B Grade game was a different story. Requiring just 100 more for victory, the win came in no time, but they weren't about to just stop there! Muzz punished the bowling as he neared his maiden senior ton, before a rush of blood saw him send the ball skyward and with it his hopes of getting to the magical 3 figures.. The book will forever read: A Murray caught for 99. Jimmy Harney smacked the ball all over the park batting at 9, ending up with a quick fire 60 and the final score a very healthy 312. The match card for this game can be found here

C Grade
The C grade were defending 251 at St Pauls and after a disapointing start to the season were looking for their first win of the season. The early breakthrough didn't come and with the heat building and the outfield lightening fast we had to dig deep to claw back in to the game. Eventually wickets began to fall and the guys did really well to ensure we kept at it all day. The hard work began to pay off and when Bear threw the stumps down to take the final wicket with 30 runs to spare the first victory was ours. Richie led the troops in a strong rendition of the club song in due course! The card for the match is here

LOC Grade
The one day side took on Glenunga at Norwood high school. Batting first, JoJo smacked them around and with a little luck managed to secure yet another club ton, finishing on 115! Well done Joey! Grant Bown also batted very well to hit 50. The final score from 40 overs was 5/248. Oh yeah, Kiwi got a goldie!, Rumor has it he was stumped by about 4 metres going for a dancing block.. In reply with the ball, Glenunga were never in the contest, being rolled for 97. Kiwi redeemed himself somewhat, taking 3/17 while Lairdy took 2/9 and Grant took 2 for none! See the match card here

18 Nov 2006 - Round 4 Update

A Grade
The A grade are hosting Concordia in the Grand Final rematch from last year. Concordia will be chasing us this time around with the Valleys posting a very respectable target of 271. Best with the Bat was Murray Riddle (83) and Andrew Dunn (52), while Maccas horror run continued being knocked over for a duck !

B Grade
The B Grade are playing Pembroke at Haslam oval and are looking to further cement their position at the top of the ladder. Batting first, Pembroke were rolled for 150 with Brett Dyson nabbing 4 scalps and all other bowlers returning excellent figures. In reply the Valleys are 1/50.

C Grade
The C Grade are playing PAOC at St Pauls. The Master won the toss for a change and elected to bat. An excellent opening partnership by new comer Simon 'Ape Man' (77) and Aza (55) saw us take the tea break at 2/160 odd before a mini collapse at the end of the innings (sparked by Richie walking across his stumps to be plumb LBW, hit by a full toss on his back leg 3 inches from the ground on middle stump) saw the final score rest at a respectable 251.

LOC Grade
The LOCs took on Old Ignatians (again 2 weeks in a row!) at their home ground. Batting first Iggys posted 150 after being bowled out in the 40th over. Kiwi and Maxi both got 3 wickets. With the bat, we managed to get past the Iggys total with 2 wickets to spare. Jordan Pepper top scored with 35 while Kiwi (29) missed out on getting his name in the paper twice by one run.

11 Nov 2006 - Round 3 Roundup

As the lightening flashed around us and thunder rumbled from the dark, rolling clouds, we all took the field wondering just how much game time we would get from the day's play, but as fate would have it (and has done so far this season) the rain stayed away for the main part with all grades turning in a result.

The A Grade took on Goodwood at Goodwood and were chasing 320 for victory after the Goodwood opener carried his bat, remaining unbeaten on 169 after the 10th wicket fell last week.
In reply, the Valley's started nervously losing early wickets to be in trouble at around 6/80 before Nicko 53 and Lee Crowhurst 79* fought back valiantly to see us have a sniff of an unlikley victory. It wasn't to be however and we were eventually dismissed in the 78th over for a well fought 284. The card for the match can be seen here.

B Grade

Hope Valley 273 defeated Goodwood 267.
Wisha won the toss against Goodwood and decided to have a bat on a Hope Valley deck that was a little greener than the norm. The decision was quickly justified with Mark Mirams, playing his first B grade game for many years, and Muzz getting the Valley's off to a flyer. The opening partnership passed the hundred mark in the 24th over and had got to 138 before Muzz was run out after a terrible mix up for 89. Wish & Mirra then safely saw the side to an amazing 1/170 at tea off just 36 overs. After tea, the home sides fortunes began to change with Mirra caught behind down the legside in the first over after tea for a well made 55. The youngster Sean "Willo" Williams then came to the crease and quickly got into stride after a nervous start. The skippers dismissal for 18 triggered a collapse of 8/65 that saw the score go from 2/208 to 273 all out. Willo smashed them everywhere in another impressive knock of 54.

The second Saturday saw the Valley's off to another flying start, reducing Goodwood to 3/28. Butch got the initial break through caught at first slip off Jimmy "Hanger" Harney for 2 & then young Brett Dyson found himself on a hat trick in his 5th over having the Goodwood captain caught at gully by Chappy followed by a gem to the incoming Muggleton catching the inside edge through to Wisha for a goldy! Goodwood then started consolidating, a bit of luck with some decisions going there way & a bit of help from old Muzz who couldn't catch a cold! Goodwood went to tea at 4/126. Stagg & Robinson put on 102 for the 5th wicket before Robinson was run out by a Butch & Harney partnership which was also testimant to the pairs tight bowling. Bowling changes were steadily swung as the target dwindled down and with Goodwood requiring just 16 runs off the final 5 overs with 3 wickets in hand & Stagg at the crease who had just made his century, the Valleys were under the pump.

The boys however dug deep & had a sniff when Jimmy took a wicket on the final ball of the 76th over - the equation 13 required from 18 balls. Then Chappy broke through with the vital wicket of the centurion, caught & bowled despite a rather average attempt to put him off in the process. A couple more tight overs saw 8 required for victory off the 80th over to be bowled by Jimmy. Jubilant scenes for the Demons as Hanger came through with the goods taking the final wicket, easily caught by Brett Dyson.

An electric 6 run victory to the Valley's sees the B's 3 wins from 3 and retain top spot on the ladder. The full card for this match can be found here.

C Grade

The C Grade suffered another dissapointing loss, going down to Flinders Uni at Flinder Uni #2. Bowling first, the home side hit 201 with newcomer Tazo the best with the ball grabbing 4 wickets from 13 overs including 7 maidens. In reply with the bat, the Valley's returned a dissapointning score card with Aaron top scoring with 20. With Flidner Uni chasing the outright, we were made to follow on and returned a respectable 7/169 from 37 overs with Adam Ellershaw belting a quick fire 76 to be the pick of the batters.
See the full card for this game here.

LOC Grade

The LO C Grade hosted Old Ignatians at St Pauls. JoJo won the toss for once and had no hesitation in batting first. Despite their very different batting styles, an excellent opening partnership betwen Brett Wilkey (42) and Kiwi (37)  got us off to a flier before the run rate slowed down a tad. Shurvs (56*) batted well despite being run off his feet by more spritely partners and Ribba (20*) hit some quick runs at the death to see the total reach 219. In reply, Old Iggys started steadily before the breakthrough came. The game was quite close as Iggys continued to find the fence, before wickets started to fall with regularity. Lairdy (5/20) returned the best figures with the ball as the vistitors were eventually rolled for a well fought 182, handing the Valleys a 37 run victory.

28 Oct 2006 - Round 2 Roundup

A Grade
Hope Valley 323 (Webber 111, Riddle 75, Dunn 43) def. Ingle Farm 161 (Collyer 5/66) & 4/88.
The A's are leading the club from the front with a 100% record from the first 2 games. After a very good bowling performance lead by Skiddy (5 for 66) last week we knocked over Ingle Farm for 161.
The run out of Ingle Farms dangerman Yates for 68 was a key moment in the innings. This left our batters about 20 odd overs to bat on the first day.
After a shaky start with Paddy Harney caught early for his second duck in a row and Scotty Dobson also out, Heath Weber and Murray Riddle steadied the ship to get to stumps 2 wickets down. Then the show began on the second day with Heath and Murray cruising past Ingle Farms score and then continuing on for huge partnership in good time.
Murray was out for a very well made 75. This brought Macca to the crease on a pair and saw him return to the sheds with that pair.
Dunny batted well for 43 with contributions from Scooter and Madigan - the team eventually being bowled out for 323.
The innings of the match belonged to Heath who was quite subdued compared to normal with 111 off 161 balls. Ingle Farm batted again and ended up with 4 for 88. A good win by the boys!

B Grade
Hope Valley 188 (Barty 59) def. Unley 120 (Dyson 3/20, Crowhurst 3/25) and 7/114 (Crowhurst 3/24).
The B's also put in a good performance with the ball to run through Unley for 120 just after tea. Debutant Brett Dyson started the ball rolling with a couple of early wickets finishing with 3 for 20. Lee Crowhurst was the pick of the bowlers in his first game at full pace for 12 months with 3 for 24.
After a rocky start we ended the day on 5 for 79 with Michael 'The Wall' Barton still there with Crystal Butcher. Sean Williams also looked good for 20.
After a long week to think about what was required Barty (59) and Butch (26) batted superbly to pass Unley's score without losing another wicket. Crowy batted well once it was all over to end on 23no which saw us all out for 188.
With the slight chance of an outright a few quick wickets were required. Dys and Crystal got us going and Lee bowled the spell of the match to put us in with a chance. This just wasn't to be as too many balls flew off edges to the fence and time ran out. At the end of the day Unley were 7 down and only 40 runs in front.
2 wins from 2 matches sees the Hope Valley B grade team at the top of B1.

C Grade
Hope Valley 7/73 (Eshmade 32no) vs Concordia 112.
The C's are still to register their first win for the season. After a good bowling performance in bowling Concordia out for 112, with the wickets shared amongst the bowlers. Its good to see young Tzekas and Williams taking wickets again in this game.
We got to stumps on 72 needing only 41 to win but unfortunately we lost a lot of wickets to be 7 down. Coming into the day on 32 the result rested on the very broad shoulders of Gomer. All out for 87 was the as close as we got with Gomer finishing on 40.
Concordia then batted again to be 7 for 253 at the end of the day with Jarrad Williams getting another 3 wickets. Some work to do for the C's to get up the C1 league table.

LOC Grade
The LOC's played Uni at Uni for the second week in a row (great fixturing by Adelaide Turf). This one turned out a bit different to last week.
We bowled first and got them all out for 123 in the 27th over. Lairdy picked up 4 for 38 with the other wickets shared.
After losing 3 early wickets (Wilkey & Burnes 0) Mirra settled in for a long innings to take us to victory with the help of Stuey Pocock. Stuey made 39 to add to his 2 wickets in a good return from illness.
Well thats 1 all in the series with Uni, wonder if ATCA will programme the decider this week? ;)

21 Oct 2006 - Rd 2 Update

A warm and sunny (and challenging) Saturday greeted Hope Valley teams in Round 2.
All teams played attacking cricket, our bowlers did well with the ball...and hopefully some can do the same with the bat this coming weekend.

A Grade
Played Ingle Farm at the Valley on another batters deck. We are in a strong position after rolling Ingle Farm soon after tea for 161. The pick of the bowlers was Skiddy with the great figures of 5 for 66.
In reply we have lost a couple of early wickets however the big hitting Heathy Weber has steadied the ship with 35 no, with Murray Riddle playing the anchor role at the other end.
We ended the day on 2 for 85 needing another 70 odd to start the season 2 wins from 2.

B Grade
After losing the toss and bowling against Unley we got off to a great start with first gamer Brett Dyson snaring a couple of early wickets to have them 2 for 1.
The rest of the innings went pretty well to plan with tight accurate bowling being supported with good fielding. Lethal Lee Crowhurst was the pick of the bowlers for the day finishing with 3 for 25 and Brett finished off a promising debut with 3 for 25.
In reply to Unley's 120, we are a few more wickets down than we had planned and ended on 5 for 79.
Barty was as steady as ever with 20 odd not out and not too much from the other blokes. Hopefully Barty & Butch can steer us home with the help of our 'all rounders'. Not sure whether much should be said about the Wishart/Barty mix up that lead to the skipper being run out cheaply... ;)

C Grade
Another game that saw a few more wickets fall than usual. Played at St Pauls, the mighty Valleys took on Concordia.
After a good bowling performance saw Concordia bowled out cheaply for 112 we are 7 for 72 in reply. The shining light of the the batting performance was Gomer who is still not out on 32 in his first game for a while (that may have been due to him training for the first time in years).
There is still a fair bit of work here to bring this one home, though 40 runs is very gettable this week.

LOC Grade
Under our new skipper "Jo Jo" Gallina we gathered for the fray at Park 10#2 and went through our meticulous pre match checklist:
A full pre season and fitness regime behind us? - no;
Everybody on time or at least heading to the right ground? - no;
New Kit correctly broken in to start the summer with? - no;
Everybody knowing everyone else's name? - no;
Half the side feeling the effects of the night before? - yes!
So with everything in order we set out to win some glory for the Valleys...
Batting first we got off to a real flyer with Adelaide Uni opening the pie shop early allowing Pep and Brett "The Rookie" Wilkey to score quickly. Pep was most impressive as he smashed his way to 52 whilst Wilks never looked troubled during his crafty knock of 37.
Jo Jo was merrily belting everything that came his way until he learn't the hard way that pre match speeches are not always listened to. Having reached 46 and looking like a ton was there for the taking, he foolishly allowed himself to be struck on the pad and a slightly confused Jo Jo to make his way back to the pavilion.
Welcome to the LOC's Joe!
Tombsie came and went for 2, but Shurves and Tula had a good partnership until Shurves went for 19 (and still got his name in the paper).
Kiwi was run out for 6, leaving Lairdy to earn himself a strike rate of 100 with a single off the last ball of the innings. Tula was the other not out batsman with a very nice 30 as the Valleys posted a Richie Benaud score of 222.
After enjoying the tea of fresh air and sunshine generously provided by Uni, we took the field feeling fairly confident.
Jo Jo made up for his disapointment with the bat collecting an early wicket well caught by Burnsy at fine leg.
Unfortunately, this was the only high point for us for the next 30 overs as the Uni batsmen settled in for a long stay. Jo Jo threw the ball around looking for the vital breakthrough but try as we might, it just would not come.
Finally Lairdy found the edge and Tombsie held the catch giving us some hope if we could pick up a few quick wickets...
Alas it was not to be as Uni punished our bad balls to more than match the six an over required. Tombsie gave Tula a late wicket with a nice stumping but by then the horse had bolted as Uni reeled us in during the 38th over.
Lairdy was the pick of the bowlers with 1/45, whilst Kiwi and Jo Jo can consider themselves a tad unlucky as they beat the bat regularly but couldn't find the edge.
All in all, a fairly forgettable day in the field and we all agreed that a bit of work is needed.
The beer was still cold after the game but as always, doesn't taste quite as nice after a loss but this is something the boys have vowed to rectify next week.
Go You Valleys!
Signed Mr Ree

14 Oct 2006 - Rd 1 Round Up

As people keep saying about the weather, 'the times they are a changing' - two Saturdays in a row at the start of the season and not a hint of rain!
The Valleys continued last weeks good start to the season with both the As and Bs starting the season with a win - although the A's made it by the skin of their teeth..

A Grade

The A Grade started their day in trouble at 2 for 3 from last weeks nervous start, chasing a 151 for victory. Nicko was first to go, and was followed (very) shortly afterwards by Macca on debut as club captain, knocked over first ball for a goldie. Dunny then joined the crease with opener Frang and they shared a good partnership before Dunny was dismissed for 43 bringing Scooter the crease. Scooter didn't trouble the scorers and when Heath came and went and Frang was finally dismissed for a well compiled 42, we were in trouble. A progress score was relayed to on Satuday afternoon we were told it was 8/130. We weren't to know that another wicket fell not long afterwards, but it was Brett Madigan and Jon Deconno that eventually saw us fall across the line, for a well fought, albeit slightly lucky first round win over SPOC!

The full card for this game is here

B Grade
The B's started the day with everything on their side, a nice cool day in the field with blustery winds and 300 + in the bank, so it wasn't too long before the first Ingle Farm wicket fell with edge through to Wishy behind the stumps. Pete Butcher then trapped the no 3 bat drop in front with scoring, and we were on our way. Another wicket before tea saw us take the break at around 3/90.

After lunch the local side really turned the screws with some quality bowling and the wickets began to fall. Peter Butcher and club new comer Nicko Lehman both bowled well to wrap up the middle order and the tail, eventually seeing the visitors dismissed for 172 handing us an impressive 144-run first round victory. With 13 bonus overs to bat, Nicko's performance with the ball was rewarded with an opening stint with Muzza (who was on a pair). Muzz then came oh so close to getting that pair when the bowler dropped a sitter soon afterwards when on zero, before he was finally fired by Joe Joe - possibly for almost getting that pair. Acca came to the crease and showed us he can bat, hitting two glorious cover drives to the fence back to back. Our final score in the second dig was 2/63.

C Grade

The C Grade went down to SPOC, failing in the run chase after being bowled out for 127 in the 46th over. Richie top scored with 29. In the 2nd Innings SPOC were 6/63 with Burns and Tzekas grabbing wo wickets each. The full card for this game can be found here.

9 Oct 2006 - Round 1 Update

Breaking with tradition and in stark contrast to last season, round 1 actually saw the season get underway with barely a cloud in the sky. The Valleys had a good start to the season with a number of standout performances - one in particular was 20 years in the making...

A Grade
Our A grade started the season with a trip to SPOC, who after being relegated from Premier grade last season will be keen to redeem themselves. Bowling first, the Valley did well to restrict SPOC to a chaseable total of 10/150. Wickets were shared amongst the bowlers with Skiddy getting his name in the paper, and Johnno, Macca and Heathy picking up a couple each. Nicko also started his season well with a good day behind the stumps.

In reply with the bat SPOC snared two early wickets nabbing Paddy without scoring and last seasons Grand Final centurian Murray Riddle for one. Nicko and Frang are unbeaten at the crease and requir another 130 odd for victory next Saturday.

B Grade
The B's hosted local rivals Ingle Farm at the Valley on an absolute pearler of a deck. Wisha won the toss and had no hesitation in having a hit first. Barty and Muzza strode to the middle to take the first ball and it wasn't long before Muzz was cursing his way back to the shed, after being knocked over without scoring. In an unfamiliar scene to follow, Wisha strode to the middle at number 3 after playing all last season at the end of order (averaging 170 mind you) and what a change it was! After being in trouble early at 1/3, Wisha and Barty shared an excellent and disciplined partnership proving that they are two of the toughest guys to dismiss, taking the tea break at 1/109. After tea, runs continued to flow as Wisha raced ahead of Barty knocking up his first 50 in a long time, before finally being dismissed for a well made 72, ending a 152 run partnership. Sean Williams took to the crease at number 4 and after a nervous start, began hitting the ball well as Barty also began to open his shoulders, sending many a ball to the fence. Bartys agression saw him get closer and closer to the magical 3 figures before it finally happened - Barty had a ton! (Congrats mate, couldn't have happened to a nicer bloke!- 20 years in the making!). Barty was finally disimissed for 108 and Joe Galina came out for a few quick zacks and he and Willow continued to punish the bowling as the score climbed towards 300. Willow was eventually dismissed for a well made 47 and the Valley's ended the day at 6/316, showing the value that having wickets in hand has after the tea break. Well done guys!

C Grade
The C's also ventured to SPOC and bowled first. Dropped catches were the story of the day with SPOC at one point being 9/160 before being dismissed for around 210.

LOC Grade
There was no game for the LOC's this week, with their first game due to be played this coming Saturday 14th.
